Shri Sutra

Deep-root architecture & rhizosphere mapping

Origin & History

The root layer, decoded.

Sutra (सूत्र) means 'thread' in Sanskrit — the unseen continuum that binds. Rooted in classical Vrikshayurveda (~10th century CE), where the health of a plant was diagnosed from its root architecture, Shri Sutra applies modern minirhizotron imaging and rhizosphere DNA assays to surface what the soil hides. The protocol formalises a centuries-old farmer observation: deep, fibrous, biologically active roots are the truest indicator of a regenerative farm.

The Science

Roots are the carbon pump of agriculture — up to 60% of photosynthate exuded into the rhizosphere ends up sequestered in soil organic matter. Shri Sutra quantifies root mass density, branching angle, and microbial recruitment using hyperspectral root scans + soil eDNA at 0–30 / 30–60 / 60–90 cm depth.

Crop Applications

How Shri Sutra shows up in the field.

Each crop responds differently to root-layer intelligence. Validated across ICAR + state agri university pilots.

Sugarcane

Sugarcane

Targets root mass at 90 cm; deep-tap roots reduce lodging & boost ratoon yield.

Rice (SRI)

Rice (SRI)

Single-seedling spacing + alternate wetting/drying triggers 3× root volume.

Wheat

Wheat

Mycorrhizal inoculants extend rooting zone for terminal-heat tolerance.

Pulses (Tur, Gram)

Pulses (Tur, Gram)

Rhizobium-mediated N₂ fixation tracked via root nodule count + colour.

Practices across States

Crop × state ground-truth deployments.

How Shri Sutra is being practised today — drawn from state agriculture department programmes, ICAR institutes and CIDSA field partners.

Maharashtra

Crop: Sugarcane

Trench planting + green manure (Sunn hemp) before sugarcane — Sutra protocol increases root depth by 40 cm.

Punjab

Crop: Wheat

Conservation tillage with Happy Seeder retains residue mulch, doubling fine-root biomass.

Tamil Nadu

Crop: Rice

SRI method validated by TNAU — Sutra adds drone-NDVI overlays for cohort comparison.

Madhya Pradesh

Crop: Soybean

Ridge-furrow + biofertiliser inoculation increases nodule count from 18 → 42 per plant.

Farmer Benefits

What the farmer takes home.

Shri Sutra translates field intelligence into bankable, measurable, daily outcomes — without locking the farmer into proprietary inputs.

30–60 cm deeper root mass → drought resilience

Up to 0.5% SOC accrual per year through root exudates

Reduced N-fertiliser by 25% via mycorrhizal mining of phosphorus

Higher ratoon longevity (sugarcane, pigeonpea)
