Shri Tejas
Solar-powered farm energy & resilience grid
Origin & History
The energy layer, decoded.
Tejas (तेजस्) means 'radiance' — fire, energy, light. India is the global leader in solar agriculture under the PM-KUSUM scheme (2019), targeting 30.8 GW by 2026. Shri Tejas operationalises decentralised solar: per-farm solar pumps, agrivoltaics canopies, and battery resilience. Tied to KUSUM Component-B (off-grid pumps) and Component-C (grid feed-in).
The Science
Solar power is sized using GHI maps (NIWE), crop water-demand × pump head × efficiency. Surplus generation is monitored against tariff windows; net-feed via Component-C inverters back to the DISCOM. Agrivoltaic canopies use bifacial panels with 4 m row spacing to allow understory crops (turmeric, ginger, leafy vegetables).
Crop Applications
How Shri Tejas shows up in the field.
Each crop responds differently to energy-layer intelligence. Validated across ICAR + state agri university pilots.

Pulses (rainfed)
Solar pumps enable timely supplemental irrigation in marginal lands.

Turmeric (agrivoltaic)
Under-panel turmeric thrives in 40% shade; dual income for farmer.

Banana
Solar drip + cold-storage links cut fuel cost by 90%.

Floriculture
Solar-powered polyhouses for marigold + rose year-round production.
Practices across States
Crop × state ground-truth deployments.
How Shri Tejas is being practised today — drawn from state agriculture department programmes, ICAR institutes and CIDSA field partners.
Maharashtra
Crop: Multi-crop
MSEDCL's Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini (MSKVY) — solar feeders for agriculture.
Rajasthan
Crop: Mustard + Cumin
KUSUM-B 5,000 off-grid pumps; Tejas tracks output + maintenance.
Gujarat
Crop: Cotton + Pulses

Karnataka
Crop: Horticulture

Farmer Benefits
What the farmer takes home.
Shri Tejas translates field intelligence into bankable, measurable, daily outcomes — without locking the farmer into proprietary inputs.
Electricity bill near-zero for solar-pump farmers
Surplus solar export earns ₹2.5–3.5/kWh — extra annual income ₹50,000–1,20,000
Climate-resilience: power continuity in blackouts
Agrivoltaic models add 60–80% non-farm income per acre
